देवशोधन — समास 5: मायाब्रह्मनिरुपण

श्रोते पुसती ऐसें । माया ब्रह्म तें कैसें । श्रोत्यां वक्त्यांच्या मिसें । निरुपण ऐका ॥ १ ॥

श्रोत्यांनीं असा प्रश्र्ण विचारला कीं, माया व ब्रह्म हीं कशीं आहेत? श्रोता व वक्ता यांच्या संवादाच्यायोगें त्याचे निरुपण ऐका.

The listener asked, "What is maya and what is that brahman?" Therefore under the pretence of there being a speaker and a listener, listen to this discourse (truly there is One; both the listener and speaker are within you only; maharaj- you come here because you think you are ignorant and you think that I know. But there is nothing but you in the world, so where does the answer come from?).

ब्रह्म निर्गुण निराकार । माया सगुण साकार । ब्रह्मासि नाहीं पारावार । मायेसि आहे ॥ २ ॥

ब्रह्म हे निर्गुण व निराकार आहे. तर माया सगुण व साकार आहे. ब्रह्म अनंत आहे तर माया परिमितआहे.

brahman is nirgun and formless; maya is sagun and form. brahman has no bounds; maya has.

ब्रह्म निर्मळ निश्र्चळ । माया चंचळ चपळ । ब्रह्म निरोपाधी केवळ । माया उपाधीरुपी ॥ ३ ॥

ब्रह्म निर्मळ व निश्र्चळ तर माया चचंल आहे. ब्रह्म निव्वळ अमर्यादित तर माया ही मर्यादीत आहे.

brahman is pure and still; maya is moving and active. brahman is pure knowledge without any limiting concept; maya is like its limitation.

माया दिसे ब्रह्म दिसेना । माया भासे ब्रह्म भासेना । माया नासे ब्रह्म नासेना । कल्पांतकाळीं ॥ ४ ॥

ब्रह्म दिसत नाही. माया मात्र दिसते. ब्रह्म भासत नाही. माया भासते. ब्रह्म कल्पांतीसुद्धा नासत नाही. माया मात्र नासते.

maya is seen, brahman is not seen; maya is perceptible, brahman is not. maya is destroyed; brahman does not get destroyed at the end of time and imagination.

माया रचे ब्रह्म रचेना । माया खचे ब्रह्म खचेना । माया रुचे ब्रह्म रुचेना । अज्ञानासी ॥ ५ ॥

ब्रह्म निर्माण होत नाही. तर माया निर्माण होते. ब्रह्म क्षय पावत नाही. माया क्षय पावते. ब्रह्म अज्ञानी जीवाला आवडत नाही. माया मात्र अज्ञानी जीवाला आवडते.

maya is constructed, brahman is not constructed; maya is destroyed, brahman is not destroyed. maya is liked by the ignorant and brahman is not liked by them.

माया उपजे ब्रह्म उपजेना । माया मरे ब्रह्म मरेना । माया धरे ब्रह्म धरेना । धारणेसी ॥ ६ ॥

ब्रह्म जन्मत नाही. तर माया जन्मते. ब्रह्म मरत नाही तर माया मरते. ब्रह्म धारणेंत धरता येत नाहीं. तर माया धारणेंत धरतां येते.

maya is born, brahman is not. maya dies, brahman does not. maya can be conceived of, brahman cannot be understood by the mind.

माया फुटे ब्रह्म फुटेना । माया तुटे ब्रह्म तु्टेना । माया विटे ब्रह्म विटेना । अविनाश तें ॥ ७ ॥

ब्रह्म फुटत नाही तर माया फुटते. ब्रह्म तुटत नाही तर माया तुटते. ब्रह्म अविनाशी असल्यानें अवीट असते तर माया विनाशी असल्यानें वीटते.

maya breaks, brahman does not break. maya is snapped, brahman is not snapped. maya is spoiled, brahman is not spoiled, for it is that indestructible Reality.

माया विकारी ब्रह्म निर्विकारी । माया सर्व करी ब्रह्म कांहींच न करी । माया नाना रुपें धरी । ब्रह्म तें अरुप ॥ ८ ॥

ब्रह्म विकारामपासून मुक्त आहे. तर माया विकारयुक्त आहे. ब्रह्म कांहींच करत नाहीं. तर माया सर्व कांहीं करते. ब्रह्म रुपरहित तर माया नाना रुपसहित आहे. माया नाना रुपें धारण करते.

maya is a modification, brahman is the unmodified. maya is the doer of this `all', brahman is not the doer of this `all'. maya conceives of the `many' forms, brahman is that Reality without form.

माया पंचभूतिक अनेक । ब्रह्म तें शाश्र्वत येक । मायाब्रह्मांचा विवेक । विवेकी जाणती ॥ ९ ॥

ब्रह्म शाश्वत व एकच आहे. तर माया पंचभूतात्मक, अशाश्वत आहे. जे आत्मानात्मविवेकी असतात ते ब्रह्म व माया यांचे खरें स्वरुप जाणतात.

maya is the numerous different forms made of the five elements; brahman is that Reality, the One Eternal. The vivek between maya and brahman is known by a viveki.

माया लाहान ब्रह्म थोर । माया असार ब्रह्म सार । माया अर्ति पार । ब्रह्मासी नाहीं ॥ १० ॥

ब्रह्म विशाळ तर माया लहान आहे. ब्रह्म सारसर्वस्व तर माया सारहीन आहे. ब्रह्म स्थलातीत आहे तर माया स्थलयुक्त आहे.

maya is small and brahman is the great. maya is the non-essence, brahman is the essence. maya is the earnest desire to abound, brahman does not want to be.

सकळ माया विस्तारली । ब्रह्मस्थिती अछ्यादली । परी ते निवडूनि घेतली । साधुजनीं ॥ ११ ॥

विश्वामध्यें जिकडे तिकडे माया पसरली आहे. त्यामुळें ब्रह्म झाकले गेले आहे. साधु मायेच्या जंजाळ्यांतून शुद्ध ब्रह्मस्वरुप निवडून घेतात.

This `all' is maya expanded and it conceals that brahman state. But that Reality is selected and accepted by the sadhu.

गोंडाळ सांडून नीर घेईजे । नीर सांडूनि क्षीर सेविजे । माया सांडूनि अनुभविजे । ब्रह्म तैसे ॥ १२ ॥

पाण्यावर जमलेले शेवाळे बाजूस सारुन खालचे चांगले पाणी घ्यावे. किंवा दूध व पाणी मिसळले असतां त्यांतील पाणी बाजूस सारुन दूध प्यावें. तसेंच माया दूर करुन मिसळलेले शुद्ध ब्रह्माचा अनुभव घ्यावा.

Clearing away the moss, the clean water should be taken. And when the water is set aside then, that milk should be tasted/experienced (like the royal swan). When this experience of maya is set aside then, there is brahman.

ब्रह्म आकाशाऐसें निवळ । माया वसुंधरा डहुळ । ब्रह्म सूक्ष्म केवळ । माया स्थूळरुपी ॥ १३ ॥

ब्रह्म आकाशासारखें निर्मळ तर माया पृथ्वीसारखी मलीन व गढूळ. ब्रह्म हें सूक्ष्म तर माया स्थूळ आहे.

brahman is clear like space; maya is a container full of many wealths that have all been mixed together. brahman is subtle and maya is when that pure knowledge is having the appearance of the gross.

ब्रह्म तें अप्रत्यक्ष असे । माया ते प्रत्यक्ष दिसे । ब्रह्म तें समचि असे । माया ते विषमरुपी ॥ १४ ॥

ब्रह्म हे अतींद्रिय तर माया इंद्रियगम्य आहे. ब्रह्म सम किंवा सारखें आहे. तर माया विषम किंवा कमी जास्त आहे.

brahman is when that Reality is not perceived by senses; maya is when that Reality is seen by sensory experience. brahman is when that Reality is undifferentiated and when there is maya, then that Reality is differentiated.

माया लक्ष ब्रह्म अलक्ष । माया साक्ष ब्रह्म असाक्ष । मायेमध्यें दोनि पक्ष । ब्रह्मीं पक्षचि नाहीं ॥ १५ ॥

ब्रह्म ध्यानाचा विषय होत नाही. तर माया ध्यानाचा विषय होऊं शकते. मायेमध्यें पूर्व व उत्तर पक्ष दोन्ही असतात. तर ब्रह्मामध्यें पक्षच नाही.

maya can be concentrated on, brahman cannot be concentrated on. maya is a witness, brahman is not a witness. In maya there are two alternatives. In brahman there is no alternative.

माया पूर्वपक्ष ब्रह्म सिद्धांत । माया असंत ब्रह्म संत । ब्रह्मासि नाहीं करणें हेत । मायेसि आहे ॥ १६ ॥

ब्रह्म हा एकमेव सिद्धांत तर मायेंत अनेक पूर्वपक्ष. ब्रह्म कर्मरहित व माया कर्ममय आहे.

maya is the primary hypothesis, brahman is the established Truth/siddhant. maya is tempory, while brahman is eternal. brahman has no purpose/reason to do, while maya has purpose.

ब्रह्म अखंड घनदाट । माया पंचभूतिक पोचट । ब्रह्म तें निरंतर निघोट । माया ते जुनी जर्जरी ॥ १७ ॥

ब्रह्म अखंड आहे तर माया खंडित आहे. ब्रह्म सगळीकडे भरगच्च आहे. तर माया पंचभूतात्मक पोकळ आहे. ब्रह्म कायमचे पूर्णरुप तर माया जुनाट, कुजकी, नाशवंत आहे.

brahman is unbroken and completely full; while maya is made up of five elements and unsubstantial. brahman is when that Reality is without this inner space `I am' and without any defect; maya is when that Reality is old and torn.

माया घडे ब्रह्म घडेना । माया पडे ब्रह्म पडेना । माया विघडे ब्रह्म विघडेना । जैसें तैसें ॥ १८ ॥

ब्रह्म घडवले जात नाही. माया घडवली जाते. ब्रह्म पडत नाही, स्थानभ्रष्ट होत नाही. माया पडते स्थानभ्रष्ट होते. ब्रह्म बिघडत नाही. माया बिघडते बाधित होते.

maya happens/becomes, brahman does not happen/become. maya falls, brahman does not fall. maya gets spoiled, brahman is never spoiled and is as It is.

ब्रह्म असतचि असे । माया निरसितांच निरसे । ब्रह्मास कल्पांत नसे । मायेसि आहे ॥ १९ ॥

ब्रह्म नाहीं असे कधींच होत नाही. तर माया निरास केल्यास नाहीशीं होते. ब्रह्माला प्रलय नाही तर माया प्रलयाच्यावेळीं नाश पावणारी आहे.

brahman is always there, maya is discarded when denied (ie. when the conviction of its existence is given up). brahman is not destroyed at the end of thinking; while maya is.

माया कठिण ब्रह्म कोमळ । माया अल्प ब्रह्म विशाळ । माया नासे सर्वकाळ । ब्रह्मचि असे ॥ २० ॥

ब्रह्म कोमल, मृदु, विशाळ तर माया कठिण, आकुंचित आहे. ब्रह्म सर्वकाल टिकणारे आहे तर माया नाश पावणारी आहे.

maya is hard, brahman is delicate/soft. maya is small, brahman is huge. maya is the time of the `all' and it gets destroyed; brahman only is.

वस्तु नव्हे बोलिजे ऐसी । माया जैसी बोलिजे तैसी । काळ पावेना वस्तुसी । मायेसी झडपी ॥ २१ ॥

ब्रह्म वाणीनें वर्णन करुन सांगता येण्यासारखें नाही. तर माया जसें तिचें वर्णन करावें तशी असते. ब्रह्म काळाच्या पलीकडे आहे तर माया काळाचें भक्ष्य आहे.

The Self should never `speak' (ie. even `I am' is not required) and if maya speaks this `I am' then, the Self appears like that. Time cannot reach that Self (ie. brahman), but it can attack and beat maya.

नाना रुप नाना रंग । तितुका मायेचा प्रसंग । माया भंगे ब्रह्म अभंग । जैसें तैसें ॥ २२ ॥

ब्रह्म अभंग असल्याने मोडत नाही. जसेच्या तसे राहाते. तर माया मोडते. नाना प्रजारची रंगरुपें निर्माण करणें हा मायेचा खेळ आहे.

The `many' forms and the `many' colours, this much is with maya. maya can be broken, but brahman is unbreakable/abhanga. It is, as It is.

आतां असो हा विस्तार । चालत जातें सचराचर । तितुकी माया परमेश्र्वर । सबाह्यअभ्यमतरीं ॥ २३ ॥

माया ब्रह्माच्या लक्षणांचा हा विस्तार आतां पुरे. या विश्र्वामधें जेवढें कांहीं सचेतन व अचेतन दिसतें व नाश पावतें, तें सगळे माया होय. या सार्‍या चराचर विश्र्वाचा परमात्मा आंतबाहेर व्यापून आहे.

Now (due to this sagun understanding), that thoughtless brahman has become this expansion into the whole animate and inanimate moving world. Still inside and outside of this much maya, there is that parameshwara.

सकळ उपाधीवेगळा । तो परमात्मा निराळा । जळीं असोनि नातळे जळा । आकाश जैसें ॥ २४ ॥

दृश्य विश्र्वाच्या सगळ्या बंधनांच्या पलीकडे परमात्मा निराळा राहातो. आकाशाचे प्रतिबिंब पाण्यांत पडले तरी आकाश पाण्यापासून अलिप्त असतें. तसाच परमात्मा सर्वांत व्यापलेला असूनअलिप्त राहतो.

The `all' is a separated limiting concept and that paramatma is quite different. He is like space, for though He is in the water, He is not touched by the water. (parameshwar and paramatma are both the same. They do not take the touch of maya)

मायाब्रह्माचें विवरण । करितां चुके जन्ममरण । संतांस गेलिया शरण । मोक्ष लाभे ॥ २५ ॥

विवेकानें माया व ब्रह्म एकमेकांपासून वेगळे केले तर जन्म मरण चुकते. संतांना शरण गेल्यानें मोक्ष मिळतो.

If you make a thorough investigation into maya and brahman, then you will avoid birth and death. If you go to the Saint/Truth and take refuge there, then liberation will be attained.

अरे या संतांचा महिमा । बोलावया नाहीं सीमा । जयांचेनि जगदात्मा । अंतरचि होये ॥ २६ ॥

अहो, या संतांचा महिमा सांगावा तेवढा थोडाच आहे. त्या सांगण्याला सीमा नाही. कारण जगांत व्यापून राहिलेला परमात्मा संतांच्या कृपेनें आपल्या अंतर्यामी प्रगट होतो.

My dear child! The Saint has no limit and even this `I am' cannot speak of His greatness. Still on account of this inner space of mula maya there is that `atma of the world' (first understand this knowledge and then that Knower). .
