स्तवननाम — समास 5: संतस्तवन

आतां वंदीन सज्जन । जे परमार्थाचें अधिष्ठान । जयांचेनि गुह्यज्ञान । प्रगटे जनीं ॥ १ ॥

आतां मी संतांना जे सज्जन असून परमार्थाचा आधार आहेत त्यांना नमस्कार करतो. त्यांच्यामुळे जे गुप्त असे आत्मस्वरुपाचे ज्ञान लोकांमधे प्रगट होते.

Now I bow to the sajjana, the true saints who are the very foundation of ultimate truth, through whom the hidden knowledge of the Self becomes manifest to people.

जे वस्तु परम दुल्लभ । जयेचा अलभ्य लाभ । तेंचि होये सुल्लभ । संतसंगेकरुनी ॥ २ ॥

संतांच्या संगतीमुळे जी परमात्मवस्तु दुर्लभ आहे तीचा लाभ लोकांना सुलभ होतो.

That which is exceedingly rare to attain, that most difficult treasure, becomes easily attained through the company of saints.

वस्तु प्रगटचि असे । पाहातां कोणासीच न दिसे । नाना साधनीं सायासें । न पडे ठाईं ॥ ३ ॥

ती आत्मरुपाची वस्तु उघड आहे पण देहबुद्धीनें ती कोणालाच दिसत नाही. नाना प्रकारची साधने, प्रयास करुनही तीचा अनुभव येत नाही.

That Truth is manifest and open, yet no one sees it by mere looking; through many kinds of striving and effort it still is not found.

जेथे परीक्षवंत ठकले । नांतरी डोळस चि अंध जाले । पाहात असतांचि चुकले । निजवस्तूसी ॥ ४ ॥

आत्मवस्तु शोधुन काढण्यांत नाना वस्तु शोधुन काढु शकणारे परीक्षवंतसुद्धा फसतात. ते डोळे असुनही आंधळे होतात. ती वस्तु जवळच व पहात असुनही तीला पहायला चुकतात.

There even the sharpest examiners are deceived, the clear-sighted become as if blind, and even while looking directly they miss that true Self.

जें दीपाचेनि दिसेना । नाना प्रकाशें गवसेना । नेत्रांजनेंहि वसेना । दृष्टीपुढें ॥ ५ ॥

दिव्याच्या उजेडांत, निरनिराळ्या इतर अनेक प्रकाशांत ती सापडत नाही. डोळ्यांत तेल घालूनही ती दृष्टीला दिसत नाही.

It is not seen by lamplight, nor found by any other light; nor does it come into view even with medicine applied to the eyes.

सोळां कळी पूर्ण शशी । दाखऊं शकेना वस्तूसी । तीव्र आदित्य कळारासी । तोहि दाखविना ॥ ६ ॥

सोळा कळा असलेला पौर्णिमेचा चंद्र ती वस्तु दाखवु शकत नाही; सर्व कळांनीयुक्त असा तेजस्वी सूर्यसुद्धा ती वस्तु दाखवू शकत नाही.

The full moon of sixteen digits cannot reveal that Self, nor can even the most brilliant sun uncover it.

जया सूर्याचेनि प्रकाशें । ऊर्णतंत तोहि दिसे । नाना सूक्ष्म पदार्थ भासे । अणुरेणादिक ॥ ७ ॥

कोळ्यांनी विणलेल्या जाळ्याचा बारीक धागा सूर्यप्रकाशांत दिसतो. अणु-रेणुसारखे अतिसूक्ष्म पदार्थ सूर्याच्या प्रकाशांत दिसतात.

By whose light even the spider's fine thread is seen, and the subtlest of things — atoms and the like — become visible.

चिरलें वाळाग्र तेंहि प्रकासी । परी तो दाखविना वस्तूसी । ते जयाचेनि साधकांसी । प्राप्त होये ॥ ८ ॥

केससुद्धा चिरला तरीसुद्धा त्याचे टोक सूर्यप्रकाशांत दिसते. परंतु सूर्यप्रकाश ते दाखवू शकत नाही. ते आत्मवस्तु संताच्या सान्निध्यांत साधकाला दिसते.

Even a split hair's tip is revealed in that same light — yet the light itself cannot show the Self; that, the seeker attains only in the company of the saint.

जेथें आक्षेप आटले । जेथ प्रेत्न प्रस्तावले । जेथें तर्क मंदावले । तर्कितां निजवस्तूसी ॥ ९ ॥

त्या निजवस्तुपुढे सर्व शंका नाहीशा होतात, प्रयत्न व्यर्थ ठरतात व तर्कसुद्धा कमी पडतात.

There, before that true Self, all objections dry up, every effort proves in vain, and even reasoning grows faint trying to fathom it.

वळे विवेकाची वेगडी । पडे शब्दाची बोबडी । जेथें मनाची तांतडी । कामा नये ॥ १० ॥

विवेकाची लुळा पडतो, शब्दांची बोबडी वळते, आणि मनाची धडपड उपयोगी येत नाही.

There, discrimination itself falters, words stumble like a stammering tongue, and all the haste of the mind is of no use at all.

जो बोलकेपणें विशेष । सहस्त्र मुखांचा जो शेष । तोहि सिणला निःशेष । वस्तु न संगवे ॥ ११ ॥

जो बोलण्यांत प्रवीण असा हजार तोंडांचा शेष नागसुद्धा त्या आत्मवस्तुचे वर्णन करतांना थकला.

Even Shesha, the thousand-mouthed serpent of matchless eloquence, grew utterly weary and still could not fully describe that Self.

वेदे प्रकाशिलें सर्वहि । वेदविरहित कांही नाहीं । तो वेद कोणासहि । दाखऊं सकेना ॥ १२ ॥

सगळे ज्ञान वेदांनी प्रकाशांत आणले. वेदांत नाही असे काहींच नाही. परंतु ते वेदही आत्मवस्तु दाखवू शकत नाहीत.

The Vedas have illumined everything, and nothing at all lies outside them — yet even the Vedas cannot reveal that Self to anyone.

तेचि वस्तु संतसंगें । स्वानुभवें कळों लागे । त्याचा महिमा वचनीं सांगें । ऐसा कवणु ॥ १३ ॥

संतसंगतीने मात्र साधकाला आत्मस्वरुपाचा स्वानुभव येऊं लागतो. त्याचा महिमा सांगु शकणारा असा कोणीच नाही.

That very Self is known through one's own direct experience, in the company of saints; who indeed could ever express its greatness in mere words?

विचित्र कळा ये मायेची । परी वोळखी न संगवे वस्तूची । मायातीता अनंताची । संत सोये सांगती ॥ १४ ॥

मायेच्या वेगवेगळ्या शक्ती, कला त्या आत्मस्वरुपाची ओळख करुन देऊं शकत नाहीत. मायेच्या पलीकडे असलेल्या आत्मवस्तुचे ज्ञान संत सोप्या पद्धतीने साधकास करुन देतात.

The wondrous powers of maya can be known, yet they cannot convey the true recognition of the Self; saints alone show the seeker the way to that endless Reality beyond maya.

वस्तूसी वर्णिलें नवचे । तेंचि स्वरुप संतांचें । या कारणें वचनाचें । कार्य नाहीं ॥ १५ ॥

वाचेने वर्णन करता येत नाही असे ते आत्मस्वरुपच संत झालेले असतात. तेथे बोलण्याचा काही उपयोगच नाही.

That Self which cannot be described in words is itself the very nature of the saints; there, words are of no use at all.

संत आनंदाचे स्थळ । संत सुखचि केवळ । नाना संतोषाचें मूळ । ते हे संत ॥ १६ ॥

संत म्हणजे आनंद, संत म्हणजे सुख आणि नाना प्रकारचा संतोष असे संत असतात.

The saint is the very abode of bliss, the saint is happiness itself, the saint is the root of every kind of joy — such are the saints.

संत विश्रांतीची विश्रांती । संत तृप्तीची निजतृप्ती । नांतरी भक्तीची फळश्रुती । ते हे संत ॥ १७ ॥

संताजवळ कायम विश्रांती असते. तसेच त्यांच्याजवळ कायम तृप्ती असते. अंतरी असलेल्या भक्तीची फळश्रुती म्हणजे संत.

The saint is rest within all rest, the saint is contentment's own true contentment, the saint is the very fruit of devotion — such are the saints.

संत धर्माचें धर्मक्षेत्र । संत स्वरुपाचें सत्पात्र । नातरी पुण्याची पवित्र । पुण्य भूमी ॥ १८ ॥

संत म्हणजे धर्माचे धर्मक्षेत्र, संत म्हणजे आत्मस्वरुप ठेवलेले चांगले भांडे, संत म्हणजे पुण्य साठवलेली पुण्यभूमीच होय.

The saint is the very field of dharma, the saint is the worthy vessel of the true Self, the saint is the sacred, merit-filled ground of holiness.

संत समाधीचें मंदिर । संत विवेकाचें भांडार । नातरी बोलिजे माहेर । सायोज्यमुक्तीचें ॥ १९ ॥

संत म्हणजे समाधीरुपी देवाचे मंदिर, सुविचारांचा खजिना आणि सायोज्यमुक्तीचे माहेरच असते.

The saint is the temple of samadhi, the saint is the treasury of discernment, the saint is truly called the maternal home of final liberation.

संत सत्याचा निश्र्चयी । संत सार्थकाचा जयो । संत प्राप्तीचा समयो । सिद्धरुप ॥ २० ॥

संत म्हणजे दृढनिश्र्चयि सत्य, संत म्हणजे सफल जीवनाचा जय, संतांचा संग म्हणजे आत्मस्वरुप दर्शनाचा योग.

The saint is the very certainty of truth, the saint is the triumph of a fulfilled life, the saint is the accomplished occasion of attaining the Self.

मोक्षश्रिया आळंकृत । ऐसे हे संत श्रीमंत । जीव दरिद्री असंख्यात । नृपती केले ॥ २१ ॥

मोक्षलक्ष्मीने अलंकृत असे हे संत श्रीमंतच असतात. ते इतर अज्ञानी जीवांना आत्मस्वरुपाचे दर्शन देऊन ज्ञानी म्हणजे राजे बनवितात.

Adorned with the wealth of liberation, such are these truly wealthy saints; they turn countless impoverished souls into kings.

जे समर्थपणें उदार । जे कां अत्यंत दानशूर । तयांचेनि हा ज्ञानविचार । दिधला न वचे ॥ २२ ॥

संत म्हणजे उदार सामर्थ्य, ते हे सामर्थ्य दुसर्‍यांना म्हणजेच अज्ञानी साधकांना दान करतात, ते आत्मज्ञान देणार नाहीत हा विचार मनांत येतच नाही.

Generous in their power, exceedingly openhanded in giving, it would never occur to such saints to withhold this knowledge of the Self from anyone.

माहांराजे चक्रवती । जाले आहेत पुढें होती । परंतु कोणी सायोज्यमुक्ती । देणार नाहीं ॥ २३ ॥

मोठेमोठे राजे पूर्वी झाले, अजुनही होतील पण सायोज्यमुक्ती कोठलाच राजा देऊं शकत नाही.

Great emperors and sovereign kings have come, are here, and will come again — but not one of them can grant that final liberation of union.

जें त्रैलोकीं नाहीं दान । तें करिती संतसज्जन । तयां संतांचें महिमान । काय म्हणौनि वर्णावें ॥ २४ ॥

त्रैलोक्यांत शोधून सापडणार नाही असे दान ते संतसज्जन देऊं शकतात, त्यांचे वर्णन काय, कसे करावे?

That gift found nowhere in the three worlds, only the saints and the truly good can give; how, then, could their greatness ever be fully described?

जें त्रैलोक्याहून वेगळें । जें वेदश्रुतीसी नाकळे । तेंचि जयांचेनि वोळे । परब्रह्म अंतरीं ॥ २५ ॥

जें परब्रह्म त्रैलोक्याहून वेगळे आहे, जे वेद व श्रुतींनाही कळत नाही, ते आत्मस्वरुप संतांच्या कृपेने साधकाच्या अंतरी प्रगट होते.

That which stands apart from the three worlds, which even the Vedas and Shruti cannot grasp — through the saints alone, that Supreme Brahman is revealed within the heart.

ऐसी संतांची महिमां । बोलिजे तितुकी उणी उपमा । जयांचेनि मुख्य परमात्मा । प्रगट होये ॥ २६ ॥

अशा संताचा मोठेपणा वर्णन करण्यास सर्व उपमा कमी पडतात. अशा संताच्यामुळे परमात्मा प्रगट होतो.

Such is the greatness of the saints that every comparison falls short in describing it; yet through them, the Supreme Self itself is made manifest.
