स्तवननाम — समास 9: परमार्थस्तवन

आतां स्वऊं हा परमार्थ । जो साधकांचा निजस्वार्थ । नांतरी समर्थामध्यें समर्थ । योग हा॥ १ ॥

मी आता परमार्थाचे मोठेपण सांगतो. साधकांचे खरे ध्येय व मानवी जीवनांतील उच्चतम ध्येय असा हा परमार्थ आहे.

Now I praise this ultimate truth, the very wealth of the seeker's own self, indeed the highest attainment among all attainments.

आहे तरी परम सुगम । परी जनासी जाला दुर्गम । कां जयाचें चुकले वर्म । सत्समागमाकडे ॥ २ ॥

लोकांना परमार्थ हा सोपा, सत्समागमाने असुनही नेमके तेच लोक करत नसल्याने कठीण झाला आहे.

This truth is exceedingly easy to reach, yet it has become hard for people, simply because they miss its essence found in the company of the wise.

नाना साधनाचे उधार । हा रोकडा ब्रह्मसाक्षात्कार । वेदशास्त्रीं जे सार । तें अनुभवास ये ॥ ३ ॥

नाना प्रकारची साधने आहेत पण हा ब्रह्मसाक्षात्कार करुन देणारा, जे वेदांचे सार आहे ते लगेचच अनुभवुन देणारा रोकडा व्यवहार म्हणजे परमार्थ आहे.

There are countless spiritual practices, yet this is the direct, ready realization of Brahman itself — the very essence of the Vedas and scriptures, at once experienced.

आहे तरी चहूंकडे । परी अणुमात्र दृष्टी न पडे । उदास परी येकीकडे । पाहातां दिसेना ॥ ४ ॥

हा परमार्थ, हे ब्रह्मज्ञान सर्वत्र भरलेले आहे पण ते पाहायला गेल्यावर साध्या दृष्टीला दिसत नाही. सर्वस्वाचा त्याग केला तरी हा अणुएवढाही दिसत नाही.

It is present on every side, yet not even an atom of it can be seen by mere looking; however one gazes, it remains unseen.

आकाशमार्गी गुप्तपंथ । जाणती योगिये समर्थ । इतरांस हा गुह्यार्थ । सहसा न कळे ॥ ५ ॥

हृदयस्थ आकाशमार्गाने स्वस्वरुपाला पोहोचविणारा गुप्त मार्ग फक्त योग्यांनाच माहित आहे. इतरांना हा गुह्यार्थ माहित नाही.

It is the secret path known only to the great yogis; to others, this hidden meaning is not easily grasped at all.

साराचेंहि निजसार । अखंड अक्षै अपार । नेऊं न सकती तश्कर । कांही केल्या ॥ ६ ॥

सर्व ज्ञानाचे सार असा हा अखंड, अक्षय आणि अपार परमार्थ चोरालाही चोरुन नेता येत नाही.

It is the very essence of every essence, whole, imperishable and boundless; by no means can any thief ever carry it away.

तयास नाहीं राजभये । अथवा नाहीं अग्निभये । अथवा स्वापदभये । बोलोंच नये ॥ ७ ॥

त्याला राजभय, अग्निभय किंवा श्वापदें यांपासून भय नाही. त्याबद्दल काहीं बोलूच नये.

It fears no king, no fire, and no wild beast — indeed, there is nothing more even to be said of it.

परब्रह्म तें हालवेना । अथवा ठावहि चुकेना । काळांतरीं चळेना । जेथीचा तेथें ॥ ८ ॥

परब्रह्म कोणीहीं हालवूं शकत नाही. ते एका स्थानावरुन ढळत नाही. कितीही काळ लोटला तरी ते चळत नाही.

That Supreme Brahman cannot be moved, nor does it ever lose its place; it remains just where it is, unshaken by the passage of time.

ऐसें तें निज ठेवणें । कदापि पालटों नेणें । अथवा नव्हे आदिक उणें । बहुतां काळें ॥ ९ ॥

अशी ही आपली स्वतःची ठेव आहे. तीच्यांत कधी बदल होत नाही. किंवा ती कमी जास्त होत नाही.

Such is this treasure that is truly our own: it never undergoes change, and it neither grows nor diminishes with the passing of time.

अथवा तें घसवटेना । अथवा अदृश्य होयेना । नातरी पाहातां दिसेना । गुरुअंजनेविण ॥ १० ॥

परब्रह्म कधी झिजत नाही. किंवा अदृश्य होत नाही. परंतु गुरुनें अंजन घातल्याशिवाय ते दिसत नाही.

It never wears away, nor does it ever vanish from sight; and yet, without the eye-opening grace of the Guru, it cannot be seen at all.

मागा योगिये समर्थ । त्यांचाहि निजस्वार्थ । यासी बोलिजे परमार्थ । परमगुह्य म्हणौनि ॥ ११ ॥

पूर्वी जे मोठे मोठे योगी होऊन गेले त्यांचासुद्धा निजस्वार्थ परमार्थच होता. तो गुह्यमार्गाने साध्य होतो म्हणून त्याला परमार्थ म्हणतात.

Even the great yogis of old sought this very wealth as their own true purpose; therefore it is called paramartha, the most secret of all.

जेंहीं शोधून पाहिला । त्यासी अर्थ सांपडला । येरां असोनि अलभ्य जाला । जन्मोजन्मीं ॥ १२ ॥

ज्यांनी त्याचा शोध घेतला त्यांना तो सापडला. इतरांना तो जवळ असूनही जन्मोजन्मी सापडत नाही.

Whoever has sought it out has found its true meaning; for others, though it is right there with them, it remains unattained birth after birth.

अपूर्वता या परमार्थाची । वार्ता नाहीं जन्ममृत्याची । आणी पदवी सायोज्यतेची । सन्निधचि लाभे ॥ १३ ॥

परमार्थाची अपूर्वता म्हणजे याच्याजवळ जन्म-मृत्यु नाही व सायुज्यमुक्ती मात्र याजवळ आहे.

Such is the wonder of this truth: there is no longer any talk of birth and death, and the state of final union is close at hand.

माया विविकें मावळे । सारासार विचार कळे । परब्रह्म तेंहि निवळे । अंतर्यामीं ॥ १४ ॥

विवेक-विचाराने माया लोपते. सारासाराचे ज्ञान होते. अंतर्यामींचे परब्रह्म निवळून उमजु लागते.

Through discernment, maya fades away, and understanding of the essential and the inessential dawns; that Supreme Brahman then becomes clear within.

ब्रह्म भासलें उदंड । ब्रह्मीं बुडालें ब्रह्मांड । पंचभूतांचें थोतांड । तुछ्य वाटे ॥ १५ ॥

ब्रह्म फार मोठे भासमान होऊं लागते व सगळीकडे तेच दिसूं लागते. पंचभूतांचा पसारा खोटा समजल्याने तुछ्य वाटूं लागतो.

Brahman appears vast beyond measure, and the whole universe seems to dissolve into it; the illusion of the five elements comes to seem worthless.

प्रपंच वाटे लटिका । माया वाटे लापणिका । शुद्ध आत्मा विवेका । अंतरीं आला ॥ १६ ॥

प्रपंच खोटा म्हणुन समजते व मायाही कल्पनामय म्हणून ज्ञान होते. विवेकाच्या साहाय्याने शुद्ध आत्मस्वरुपाचे अंतरी ज्ञान होऊं लागते.

The world of worldly life seems false, and maya seems a mere fable; through discernment, the pure Self is known within the heart.

ब्रह्मस्थित बाणतां अंतरीं । संदेह गेला ब्रह्मांडाबाहेरी । दृश्याची जुनी जर्जरी । कुहिट जाली ॥ १७ ॥

अंतरी ब्रह्मज्ञान झाल्याने सर्व संशय मावळतात. दृश्य विश्र्व जुने, जीर्ण झालेले, फाटलेले वाटू लागते.

Once Brahman is firmly established within, every doubt vanishes beyond the bounds of creation, and this old, worn-out visible world crumbles away.

ऐसा हा परमार्थ । जो करी त्याचा निजस्वार्थ । आतां या समर्थास समर्थ । किती म्हणौनि म्हणावें ॥ १८ ॥

हा परमार्थ असा आहे, जो करील त्याचा तो निजस्वार्थ आहे. आता यास श्रेष्ठ, थोर, शक्तिमान वगैरे कायकाय म्हणुन मोठे वर्णावे.

Such is this ultimate truth — whoever pursues it gains their own true fulfillment; how great, then, should this greatest of the great be called?

या परमार्थाकरितां । ब्रह्मादिकांसि विश्रामता । योगी पावती तन्मयता । परब्रह्मीं ॥ १९ ॥

या परमार्थामुळेमच ब्रह्मादिकांना समाधान मिळते. योगीजनांना परब्रह्मीच तल्लीनता लाभते.

Because of this ultimate truth, even Brahma and the other gods find their rest, and yogis attain complete absorption in that Supreme Brahman.

परमार्थ सकळांस विसांवा । सिद्ध साधु माहानुभावां । सेखीं सात्विक जड जीवां । सत्संगेंकरुनी ॥ २० ॥

सिद्ध, साधु, माहात्मे यांना परमार्थ समाधान देतो. सात्वीक जड जीवांना हा सत्संगाने समाधान देतो.

This ultimate truth brings rest to the accomplished, the holy, and the great-souled; and finally, through the company of saints, even dull and heavy souls attain it.

परमार्थ जन्माचें सार्थक । परमार्थ संसारीं तारक । परमार्थ दाखवी परलोक । धार्मिकासी ॥ २१ ॥

परमार्थ मानवास जन्माचे सार्थक करणारा, त्याला संसारांतुन तारुन नेणारा, व धार्मिकास परलोकींचे सुख देणारा आहे.

This ultimate truth fulfills the very purpose of birth, saves one from worldly bondage, and reveals the world beyond to the righteous.

परमार्थ तापसांसी थार । परमार्थ साधकांसी आधार । परमार्थ दाखवी पार । भवसागराचा ॥ २२ ॥

परमार्थ तापसींना आश्रय देतो. साधकांना परमार्थ आधार देतो. भवसागररुपी संसार कसा पार करावा ह्याचे ज्ञान परमार्थ देतो.

This ultimate truth is the refuge of ascetics and the support of every seeker; it carries one across to the far shore of the ocean of worldly existence.

परमार्थी तो राज्यधारी । परमार्थ नाहीं तो भिकारी । या परमार्थाची सरी । कोणांस द्यावी ॥ २३ ॥

ज्याला परमार्थ साधला तो राजाच झाला. ज्याला साधला नाही तो भिकारीच राहीला. या परमार्थाची तुलना कशाचीच करता येत नाही.

One who attains this ultimate truth becomes a true sovereign; one without it remains but a beggar — to what, then, can this truth ever be compared?

अनंत जन्मीचें पुण्य जोडे । तरीच परमार्थ घडे । मुख्य परमात्मा आतुडे । अनुभवासी ॥ २४ ॥

पुष्कळ जन्मांचे पुण्य फळफळले म्हणजे परमार्थ घडतो. त्यामुळे साक्षात अनुभव येतो.

Only when merit accumulated across countless births ripens does this ultimate truth come to pass, and the Supreme Self is directly experienced.

जेणें परमार्थ वोळखिला । तेणें जन्म सार्थक केला । येर तो पापी जन्मला । कुलक्षयाकारणें ॥ २५ ॥

ज्याने परमार्थ जाणला त्याचा जन्म सार्थक झाला. याउलट इतर पापीजन केवळ कुलक्षयासाठींच जन्मतात.

Whoever has recognized this ultimate truth has made their birth truly worthwhile; all others are born again merely as sinners, for the ruin of their own lineage.

असो भगवत्प्राप्तीविण । करी संसाराचा सीण । त्या मूर्खाचें मुखावलोकन । करुंच नये ॥ २६ ॥

भगवंताची प्राप्ती करुन न घेता जो संसारांत शीणतो, त्या मूर्खाचे तोंडही बघु नये.

Enough said — without attaining God, one merely wearies oneself in worldly toil; the face of such a fool ought not even be looked upon.

भल्यानें परमार्थीं भरावें । शरीर सार्थक करावें । पूर्वजांस उद्धरावें । हरिभक्ती करुनी ॥ २७ ॥

म्हणून भल्या माणसाने परमार्थाच्या मार्गाने जावे व आपल्या शरीराचे सार्थक करावे आणि हरिभक्ती करुन आपल्या पूर्वजांस उद्धरावे.

Let the good and wise devote themselves fully to this ultimate truth, make their bodies worthwhile, and redeem their ancestors through devotion to Hari.
