मूर्खलक्षणनाम — समास 7: सत्वगुण

मागां बोलिला तमोगुण । जो दुःखदायक दारुण । आतां ऐका सत्वगुण । परम दुल्लभ ॥ १ ॥

मागिल समासी तमोगुण सांगितला. जो दारुण दुःखदायक आहे. आता अत्यंत दुर्लभ असलेला सत्वगुण ऐका.

Previously this `speech' was the tamo guna and then, that atma purush is the giver of extremely harsh suffering (when this `speech' is forgotten on account of tamo guna then, witnessing is abandoned and that purush is confined to a gross body). Now listen (forget everything you have learnt up until now) and there will be this sattwa guna and then that Supreme which was most difficult to achieve, will be achieved (He is most difficult to acquire as long as ignorance remains).

जो भजनाचा आधार । जो योगियांची थार । जो निरसी संसार । दुःखमूळ जो ॥ २ ॥

भजनाचा आधार हा सत्वगुणच, योग्यांना योगसिद्धि मिळते ती या सत्वगुणानेच आणि संसारांतील दुःखाचे मूळ दूर करणारा हा सत्वगुणच होय.

That purush (ie. Witness) is the support of bhajan; that purush is the resting place of the yogi. That purush destroys samsar and that purush is the root of suffering (maharaj- ganesh is the beginning of sagun and nirgun).

जेणें होये उत्तम गती । मार्ग फुटे भगवंती । जेणें पाविजे मुक्ती । सायोज्यता ते ॥ ३ ॥

सत्वगुणाने उत्तम गति मिळते, भगवंताची भक्ति साधते व मुक्ति मिळुन सायोज्यता लाभते.

Due to this mula maya (sattwa guna) there is that highest state, I do not exist. This sattwa guna opens the pathway to God and one should achieve Final Liberation, that Reality, by means of this mula maya (`I am'). (Within mula maya is that pure mula purush, but He forgets Himself when He sees His reflection)

जो भक्तांचा कोंवसा । जो भवार्णवींचा भर्वसा । मोक्षलक्ष्मीची दशा । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४ ॥

भक्तजनांचा आधार, भवसागर तरुन नेणारा आणि मोक्षलक्ष्मीचे वैभव मिळवून देणारा तो सत्वगुण आहे.

That purush is the protector of devotion; that purush is your only assurance within this ocean of worldly existence. When that purush is this liberation of lakshmi (`I am' feeling; but not her spouse, narayan, I am not), then that atma is the state of sattwa guna. (The purush is narayan, ishwara, shiva etc.)

जो परमार्थाचें मंडण । जो महंतांचें भूषण । रजतमाचें निर्शन । जयाचेनी ॥ ५ ॥

तो परमार्थाची शोभा आहे. मोठ्या लोकांचे, महंतांचे भूषण आहे. रजोगुण व तमोगुण यांचे उच्चाटन या सत्वगुणाने होते.

Then that purush is this meeting place (ie. `all'); then that purush is the adornment of knowledge (the Knower has become the known). Then, both raja and tamo gunas are dissolved due to this sattwa guna of mula maya.

जो परम सुखकारी । जो आनंदाची लहरी । देऊनियां निवारी । जन्ममृत्य ॥ ६ ॥

हा सत्वगुण सुखकर व आनंददायक आहे कारण जन्म-मृत्युचे निवारण करतो. म्हणजे सत्वगुणी साधकास जन्म-मृत्युच्या दुःखांतुन मुक्त करतो.

That purush is the Supreme and the giver of happiness and that purush is the waves of bliss of mula maya and that purush is the remover of this cycle of birth and death. (It all depends upon where He places His attention)

जो अज्ञानाचा सेवट । जो पुण्याचें मूळ पीठ । जयाचेनि सांपडे वाट । परलोकाची ॥ ७ ॥

अज्ञान नाहीसे करणारा, पुण्याचा गाभा, पुण्य देणारा, ज्याच्यामुळे परलोकाची (मोक्षाची) वाट सापडते, असा हा सत्वगुण आहे.

That purush is the end of ignorance (mula maya); that purush is true merit and the origin and support of mula maya, (both are inextricably bound to each other, but if prakruti goes off then that purush becomes that One paramatma). Due to this sattwa guna of mula maya the way to this `world beyond' is found (forget everything and know this world beyond names and forms).

ऐसा हा सत्वगुण । देहीं उमटतां आपण । तये क्रियेचें लक्षण । ऐसें असे ॥ ८ ॥

असा हा सत्वगुण अंगांत असता (प्रगट होता), त्याच्यामुळे मनुष्याच्या क्रिया कशा होतात व त्याची लक्षणे ही अशी असतात. (खालील ओव्यांमध्ये दिल्याप्रमाणे)

When that thoughtless Self is this sattwa guna then, you become apparent within this body (`I am', `I am'); then that Reality has the attention of this `all' action (first separate this sattwa guna from the three mixed gunas that together create the world and body through objectification; this feeling `I am everything, everywhere' is the pure sattwa guna).

ईश्र्वरीं प्रेमा अधिक । प्रपंच संपादणें लोकिक । सदा सन्निध विवेक । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ९ ॥

ईश्र्वरावर इतरांपेक्षा अधिक प्रेम, प्रपंच व्यवस्थित सांभाळणे, नेहमी विवेकाने वागणे हे सत्वगुण विशेष होय.

When your love for God is greater than your love for the worldly acquiring the worldly (body consciousness seeks only sensual enjoyments); when vivek is always close by then, that atma is sattwa guna.

संसारदुःख विसरवी । भक्तिमार्ग विमळ दावी । भजनक्रिया उपजवी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १० ॥

संसारदुःख विसरवितो, निर्मळ भक्तिमार्ग दर्शवितो, भगवंताची भजनद्वारे भक्ति करणे; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When that One forgets the suffering of this worldly life; when that One reveals the straight path of devotion; when that One makes this pure action of bhajan arise then, that atma is sattwa guna (being in this sattwa guna is doings bhajans).

परमार्थाची आवडी । उठे भावार्थाची गोडी । परोपकारीं तांतडी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ११ ॥

परमार्थाची आवड उत्पन्न होणे, आत्मज्ञानाची गोडी निर्माण होणे, परोपकार करण्याची तत्परता; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When that One likes paramarth and there arises a fondness for pure devotion; when one feels the need to be That which uplifts this `all' (when one feels the need to be that atma) then, that atma is sattwa guna.

स्नानसंध्या पुण्यसीळ । अभ्यांतरींचा निर्मळ । शरीर वस्त्रें सोज्जळ । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १२ ॥

स्नान-संध्या व पुण्याची कामे करणे, निर्मळ अंतःकरण, शरीर व वस्त्रे स्वच्छ हे सत्वगुण दर्शवितो.

When there is this sacred bath and prayers/sandhya;4 when there is this purification of the inner space and when there is the brilliant attire of this `all' body then, that atma is sattwa guna.

येजन आणि याजन । आधेन आणि अध्यापन । स्वयें करी दानपुण्य । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १३ ॥

यज्ञ करणे व यज्ञ करवून घेणे, अभ्यास स्वतः करणे व दुसर्‍यास शिकवणे, स्वतः दान देणे, हा सत्वगुण होय.

When one performs this fire sacrifice and offers everything into these fires of knowledge; when one studies the sacred books and teaches the mind their meaning. When one's very nature is *charity then, that atma is sattwa guna. *(See 2.5.38; true charity is the donation of the mind to this `all')

निरुपणाची आवडी । जया हरिकथेची गोडी । क्रिया पालटे रोकडी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १४ ॥

प्रवचन, परमार्थ, आत्मज्ञान ऐकण्याची आवड, भगवंताच्या लिला ऐकण्यात गोडी, हे सर्व करुन चांगले ऐकल्याप्रमाणे आपल्या वर्तनांत बदल करणे, हा सत्वगुण होय.

When one has a liking for this sagun discourse; when one has a fondness for this `story' of hari; when the actions are turned into this ever-present sagun action, then that atma is sattwa guna.

अश्र्वदानें गजदानें । गोदानें भूमिदानें । नाना रत्नांचीं दानें । करी तो सत्वगुण ॥ १५ ॥

जो घोडे, हत्ती, गायी, जमीन व नाना रत्नांची दाने करतो, तो सत्वगुण होय. (ही दाने काळानुसार मौल्यवान गोष्टींची व आपापल्या योग्यतेनुसार)

4That juncture between the setting thought and the rising thought, is the sandhi, and this is the real time of prayer/sandhya When that gives away the horses and gives away the elephants; when that gives away the cows and this world (stops objectifying and sees all with equal vision); and when that gives away the jewels of the `many' then, that is the sattwa guna (maharaj- to the Saint, a diamond and a dried up piece of shit, are the same).

धनदान वस्त्रदान । अन्नदान उदकदान । करी ब्राह्मणसंतर्पण । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १६ ॥

धन-दौलतीचे दान, अन्नदान, पेयदान, ब्राह्मण भोजन जो करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one gives away one's wealth (ie. the power of objectifying) and one's coverings ("I am a body" notion); when one gives away this divine `food' (of the `I am') and when one gives away the great water element (`soft' objectification); when one satisfies the desire of the brahman (to stop objectifying and simply know) then, that atma is sattwa guna. (When this `all' becomes these great elements there is objectivity. This `all' is the wind element and it is always accompanied by the space element. At that time you see yourself everywhere. When awareness begins to move outside then there is a knowing of a world outside of yourself. This is the fire element. When individual forms start to appear, just as waves rise out of the ocean, then there is the water element and `soft' objectification. Finally when these forms become gross and appear real and you see yourself as a body in a vast objective world, that is the earth element. All this creating of objects will cease when you stop thinking continually about this world)

कार्तिकस्नानें माघस्नानें । व्रते उद्यापनें दानें । निःकाम तीर्थे उपोषणें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १७ ॥

जो कार्तिक-माघ महिन्यांतील पुण्यक्षेत्री स्नानें करतो, व्रते करतो व त्यांची उद्यापने करतो, अपेक्षा न ठेवता तीर्थयात्रा व उपवास करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

To take ceremonial baths in the winter months of kartik and margh; to observe religious self-imposed restrictions and follow various rites; to fast and go on pilgrimage with no desire in mind is sattwa guna.

सहस्त्र भोजनें लक्ष भोजनें । विविध प्रकारींचीं दानें । निःकाम करी सत्वगुणें । कामना रजोगुण ॥ १८ ॥

सहस्त्र, लक्ष भोजने घालतो, नाना प्रकारची दानें देतो, सत्वगुणी कामना न ठेवता करतो पण यांत कामना ठेवून करणारा तो रजोगुण होय.

There are the enjoyments of the thousands of objects of this world and there is the enjoyment of this attention of the `all' when these ways of the `many' are offered (the way of the `all' is the giving away of the `many' objects). When the doer is free of desire then, that atma is sattwa guna and when it does with desire then, that atma is rajo guna.

तीर्थी अर्पी जो अग्रारें । बांधे वापी सरोवरें । बांधे देवाळयें सिखरे । तो सत्वगुण ॥ १९ ॥

तीर्थक्षेत्री गरीबांना इनाम जमीनी देतो, विहीरी व तळी बांधतो. देवाळयांची शिखरे बांधतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When that purush sets aside a place for the brahmin (Knower of brahman) at this sacred pilgrimage place within; when that purush constructs the wells and reservoirs of pure water (siddharameshwar maharaj- these are the containers to hold that pure knowledge) and when that purush builds a spire of *vignyan upon this temple of knowledge then, that is sattwa guna. (This temple is a metaphor for knowledge and it is to be estab- lished within) *(siddharameshwar maharaj once told His disciples, `Up until now, I have taught you knowledge and today I am going to place the spire on this temple of knowledge. This is vignyan and that destroys this knowledge)

देवाद्वारीं पडशाळा । पाईरीया दीपमाळा । वृंदावनें पार पिंपळा । बांधे तो सत्वगुण ॥ २० ॥

देवालयांच्या जवळ भक्तांसाठी धर्मशाळा बांधतो, पायर्‍या, दीपमाळा, वृंदावने, पिंपळाचे पार लावतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one builds the resting place for pilgrims in this temple within; when one builds steps and rows of lighted lamps to show the way (pointers to make the way easier); when one builds a special place for the pinpal tree to grow then, that atma is sattwa guna.

लावी वनें उपवनें । पुष्पवाटिका जीवनें । निववी तापस्यांचीं मनें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ २१ ॥

बाग-बगीच्या देवालया शेजारी किंवा तीर्थक्षेत्रीं बनवितो, पाणपोयांची सोय करतो, तपस्वी लोकांच्या मनांत व जीवनांत शांतता टिकावी म्हणुन प्रयत्न करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one establishes a beautiful garden in this wild forest called the world (even ram got lost in this forest), with running water (water of life) and sweet smelling flowers (experiences); when that gives peace to the mind of the ascetic then, that is sattwa guna

संध्यामठ आणी भुयेरीं । पाईरीया नदीतीरीं । भांडारगृहें देवद्वारीं । बांधे तो सत्वगुण ॥ २२ ॥

जो संध्येसाठी मठ व भुयारे, नदीतीरी घाट व पायर्‍या व देवालयांच्या जवळ धान्यासाठी, अन्नासाठी कोठारे बांधतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one builds a place of prayer (ie. to know this space between two thoughts) and hidden halls below the surface (of this mind); when one constructs the steps down to the river (of knowledge) and builds a treasury room for vignyan in this temple of knowledge then that is sattwa guna.

नाना देवांचीं जें स्थाने । तेथे नंदादीप घालणें । वाहे आळंकार भूषणें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ २३ ॥

निरनिराळ्या देवांची जी देवळे तेथे नंदादीप लावतो, तेथे अलंकार, दागिने वाहतो, तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the `many' objects are this place of God then, `there' is that light and it is always kept lit before this `all' (that pure purush gives light to this world of knowledge); when all forms of beautiful things are offered then, that is sattwa guna.

जेंगट मृदांग टाळ । दमामे नगारे काहळ । नाना वाद्यांचे कल्लोळ । सुस्वरादिक ॥ २४ ॥

झेंगट, मृदंग, टाळ, मोठे नगारे व लहान नगारे, ढोल, डफ आदि वाद्ये सुस्वरे वाजवितो किंवा वाजवून घेतो तो सत्वगुण होय.

Then there is the playing of gongs, murdang and *tala, big and small drums and flutes and the `many' sounds are this sweet tune `I am' (`I am, I am'; the playing of these instruments are all metaphors for devotion and abiding in spiritual understanding). *(siddharameshwar maharaj- to always remember your swarup)

नाना सामग्री सुंदर । देवाळई घाली नर । हरिभजनीं जो तत्पर । तो सत्वगुण ॥ २५ ॥

निरनिराळ्या प्रकारची सुंदर सामुग्री देवळास अर्पण करतो, हरिभजनासाठी जो सदैव तयार असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When man enters within this temple and the `many' thoughts are collected together into this beautiful `speech'; when that purush is absorbed in the bhajan of hari then, that is the sattwa guna.

छेत्रें आणी सुखासनें । दिंड्या पताका निशाणें । वाहे चामरें सूर्यापानें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ २६ ॥

छत्रें, पालख्या, दिंड्या, पताका, निशाणे, चवर्‍या आदी देवाला वाहतो, तो सत्वगुण होय.

Then this `seat of happiness' is protected and there is the victory procession of God. Then the insignia of that Great King is raised and that is the sattwa guna.

वृंदावनें तुळसीवनें । रंगमाळा समार्जनें । ऐसी प्रीति घेतली मनें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ २७ ॥

वृंदावनें, तुळसीवनें, रांगोळ्या, देवालयाची आवारे साफ करण्याची साधने, देवाला प्रेमाने देतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When there is this garden where the `all' is assembled and a raised platform on which the tulsi plant is grown (maharaj tu-you; laya-dissolution, si-to be; you are dissolved); when the mind cleans the ground and makes a beautiful rangoli (beautiful picture of colour) then, that is sattwa guna.6

सुंदरें नाना उपकर्णें । मंडप चांदवे आसनें । देवाळईं समर्पणें । हा सत्वगुण ॥ २८ ॥

देवालयांत नाना सुंदर उपकरणे, भांडी, चांदवे, मंडप,आसने, अर्पण करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When this beautiful `speech' offers the `many' words to God then, this pathway to God is surrounded by a canopy of colour; when all this is offered in this temple of knowledge within, then that is sattwa guna.

देवाकारणें खाद्य । नाना प्रकारीं नैवेद्य । अपूर्व फळें अर्पी सद्य । तो सत्वगुण ॥ २९ ॥

देवासाठीं निरनिराळे खाद्य पदार्थ देतो, उत्तमोत्तम नैवेद्य, फळे, देवाला अर्पण करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

This is God's food; it is the sanctified food of the `I am' within these ways of the `many'. When this fruit `I am' that was never been presented before, is now offered then, that is sattwa guna.

ऐसी भक्तीची आवडी । नीच दास्यत्वाची गोडी । स्वयें देवद्वार झाडी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३० ॥

अशा भक्तिची आवड, देवाचे हलक्यांतील हलके काम करणे, देऊळ झाडणे, आवार झाडणे; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the devotee has such love for God then, God Himself is happy to serve him. Then God Himself keeps His door-way clean and patiently waits and that is sattwa guna.

तिथी पर्व मोहोत्साव । तेथें ज्याचा अंतर्भाव । काया वाचा मनें सर्व । अर्पी तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३१ ॥

भगवंताच्या क्षेत्री पुण्यतिथि, पर्वणी, मोठ मोठे उत्सव यांमध्ये सेवा करण्यासाठी तनमनधनाने अशा संधिची वाट पाहात असतो. सर्व लहान मोठ्या कामांत सहभागी होतो. तो सत्वगुण होय.

This is the time of great joy and celebration when the inner faith of that purush is kept `there' (in brahman); when the body, speech and this `all' are offered by the mind then, that is sattwa guna.

हरिकथेसी तत्पर । गंधें माळा आणी घुशर । घेऊन उभीं निरंतर । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३२ ॥

हरिकथा ऐकण्यासाठी जो नेहमी तयार असतो, देवाच्या द्वारी गंध, माळा व बुक्का घेऊन नेहमी उभा असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one is absorbed in this `story' of hari then, this is the sandal paste, garland and kumkum (this is real puja). When this `story' is completely and always told (everything is He now) then, that is sattwa guna.

नर अथवा नारी । येथानशक्ति सामग्री । घेऊन उभीं देवद्वारीं । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३३ ॥

स्त्री किंवा पुरुष देवळांत पूजेची सर्व तयारी आपापल्या शक्यतेनुसार घेऊन उभा असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When a man or woman through this power of the `all', takes this their body concept and offers it completely and always at the door of God then, that is sattwa guna.

महत्कृत्य सांडून मागें । देवास ये लागवेगें । भक्ति निकट आतंरंगें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३४ ॥

देवाची भक्ति अमतरंगी भिनल्यामुळे आपले मोठे काम बाजूस ठेऊन जो त्वरेने देवाच्या कामासाठी येतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

There is this great `action' when the past is let slip (one forgets everything) and then one comes quickly running to God; when the devotee draws near to this inner space of the `all', then that is sattwa guna.

थोरपण सांडून दुरी । नीच कृत्य आंगीकारी । तिष्ठत उभी देवाद्वारीं । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३५ ॥

स्वतःचे मोठेपण, श्रीमंती, मान बाजूला ठेवून देवाच्या द्वारीचे कनिष्ठ काम करतो व त्यासाठी देवाच्या द्वारी उभा असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one's greatness is left far away and that continuous and constant action is ac- cepted; when one naturally waits, completely and always at the door of God and that is sattwa guna.

देवालागीं उपोषण । वर्जी तांबोल भोजन । नित्य नेम जप ध्यान । करी तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३६ ॥

जो देवासाठी उपवास करतो, विडा,तंबाखु, भोजन आदी सोडतो, नित्य नेमाने जप, ध्यान करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one leaves aside *good food and pan leaf and fasts for God (I do not eat, the body eats); when one establishes the regular practice of japa and meditation then, that is sattwa guna. (maharaj- don't be specific; "I want this specific food and I don't want that" etc.)

शब्द कठीण न बोले । अतिनेमेसी चाले । योगी जेणें तोषविले । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३७ ॥

जो कठीण, कठोर शब्द बोलत नाही, नेहमी नेमाने, नियमाने वागतो, योगीजनांची सेवा करुन त्यांना खूष करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one does not `speak' these harsh and gross words of maya and is very correct and sure of one's practice (`I am He'); when the yogi gets the satisfaction of this `I am' then, that is sattwa guna.

सांडूनियां अभिमान । निःकाम करी कीर्तन । श्र्वेद रोमांच स्फुराण । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३८ ॥

जो मोठेपणाचा, नावाचा, श्रीमंतीचा, ज्ञानाचा अभिमान सोडतो, भगवंताचे किर्तन धनाची अगर कसलीही अपेक्षा न ठेवता करतो, किर्तन करतांना भगवंतावरील प्रेमाने अष्टसात्विक भाव व्यक्त करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the body ego is let slip and one does kirtana without any desire (to pervade, is to sing kirtana); when the hard heart melts and there arises ecstatic delight then, that is sattwa guna.

अंतरीं देवाचें ध्यान । तेणें निडारले नयन । पडे देहाचें विस्मरण । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ३९ ॥

जो अंतरी देवाचे ध्यान करत असतो त्यामुळे देवावरील प्रेमाने अश्रुधारा वाहु लागुन स्वतःच्या देहाचेही विस्मरण होते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one meditates on that God within the inner space (`I am beyond anything that can be seen or perceived'); when one's eyes are fixed on that Reality and this carcass of the body is forgotten, then that is sattwa guna.

हरिकथेची अति प्रीति । सर्वथा नये विकृती । आदिक प्रेमा आदिअंती । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४० ॥

ज्याला भगवंताच्या कथांची, चरित्राची, गोष्टींची फार आवड असते, त्यांचा कधिही वीट, कंटाळा येत नाही, ईश्र्वराचे प्रेम आदि अंती वाढतच असते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When there is great love for this `story' of hari and there is never ever any deviation from that; when one's love is for that which is at the beginning through to the end (ever-present within every experience), then that is sattwa guna.

मुखीं नाम हातीं टाळी । नाचत बोले ब्रीदावळी । घेऊन लावी पायधुळी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४१ ॥

ज्याच्या तोंडी नेहमी भगवंताचेच नांव असते, जो नाचतनाचत भगवमताचीच ब्रीदावळी गात असतो, भक्तजनांची पायधुळ कपाळी लावतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When on ones lips there is this `name' of God and in ones possession there are the tala (ie. remembrance of the swarup); when one dances (everywhere `I am') and `speaks' of the pervasiveness of God and takes the dust of the Saint's feet and places it on ones forehead (understands all is dust) then, that is sattwa guna.

देहाभिमान गळे । विषईं वैराग्य प्रबळे । मिथ्या माया ऐसें कळे । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४२ ॥

ज्याचा देह व इतर सर्व गोष्टींवरचा अभिमान गळून पडतो, देह उपभोगाच्या सर्व विषयांचा वीट येतो, त्यांचा कंटाळा येतो, मायेच्या मिथ्यापणाचे ज्ञान होते ; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one has no pride of the body then, powerful vairagya towards the objects of sensual pleasure arises; when one understands these false affections then that is sattwa guna.

कांहीं करावा उपाये । संसारीं गुंतोन काये । उकलवी ऐसें हृदये । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४३ ॥

संसारांत गुंतुन राहण्याचा कंटाळा येऊन त्यांतुन सुटण्याचा काहीं उपाय करावा असे वाटते व मनापासून तसा मार्ग शोधावा असे ज्ञान होते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

"This remedy of the `all' should be created, why should one stay entangled in samsar?" When such understanding arises in the heart, then that is sattwa guna.

संसारासी त्रासे मन । कांहीं करावें भजन । ऐसें मनीं उठे ज्ञान । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४४ ॥

मन संसारांतील कटकटींनी त्रस्त होते, काहीं भजन, चिंतन, मनन करावे असे ज्ञान होऊ लागते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

"samsar brings pain to the mind and by bhajan, this `all' is formed." When such knowledge arises in the mind then, that is sattwa guna.

असतां आपुलेआश्रमीं । अत्यादरें नित्यनेमी । सदा प्रीती लागे रामीं । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४५ ॥

चतुर्थाश्रमापैकी कोठल्याही आश्रमी असला, म्हणजे ब्रह्मचारी किंवा गृहस्थाश्रमी असला तरी ही आपल्या नित्य नेमांचे पालन करतो, नेहमी भगवंताच्या प्रेमांत मग्न असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one stays within one's own shelter; when one always gives respect and regard to this; then one has love for ram then, that is sattwa guna.

सकळांचा आला वीट । परमार्थी जो निकट । आघातीं उपजे धारिष्ट । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४६ ॥

संसाररुपी मायेच्या पसार्‍याचा ज्याला वीट येतो, भगवंताच्याजवळ, परमार्थाच्याजवळ, अध्यात्म्याजवळ जो असतो, प्रसंगी जो धैर्याने वागतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When there arises a weariness for this `all' then, you are a *paramarthi and that purush is close by (by remaining in this sattwa guna of simply knowing, gradually there arises the feeling of detachment from this `all'/knowledge); when in calamity ("I am a body"), courage and patience arise then, that is sattwa guna. *(One who is making paramarth)

सर्वकाळ उदासीन । नाना भोगीं विटे मन । आठवे भगवद्भजग । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४७ ॥

जो संसारिक गोष्टी विषयी अनासक्त, उदासीन असतो, जो सर्वप्रकारच्या देहभोगांपासून मन विटल्यामुळे मुक्त असतो, ज्याला आता भगवद् भजन अधिक आवडते व आठवते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When detachment is created in this time of the `all' then, the enjoyments of the `many' are tiresome only; then the mind remembers the bhajans of God, and that is sattwa guna.

पदार्थीं न बैसे चित्त । मनीं आठवे भगवंत । ऐसा दृढ भावार्थ । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४८ ॥

कोणत्याही दृश्य वस्तुचा लोभ नसतो, मनांत सतत भगवंताविषयीं प्रेम,आवड व भाव असतो, तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the chitta does not settle in this object of the `all' then, the mind remembers God (the One who knows this `all' ie. `I am the witnessing *purush'). When there is such firm conviction then, that atma is sattwa guna. *(maharaj- whatever is seen or perceived is not true; still He is there)

लोक बोलती विकारी । तरी आदिक प्रेमा धरी । निश्र्चय बाणे अंतरी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ४९ ॥

लोक म्हणतात हा वेडा झाला आहे, तरीही भगवंतावरील प्रेम वाढतच जाते, परमार्थाचा व भगवंतावरील प्रेमाचा पूर्ण निश्र्चय झालेला असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

The gross world is a modification within this `speech' and therefore with great love, one should hold on tight to this `speech'. When this conviction is impressed upon the mind then, that atma is sattwa guna.

अंतरीं स्फुर्ती स्फुरे । सस्वरुपीं तर्क भरे । नष्ट संदेह निवारे । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५० ॥

परमार्थविषयक ज्ञान झाल्याने नाना प्रकारच्या स्फूर्ति, संवेदना, प्रतिभा जागृत होतात, स्वस्वरुपाचे ज्ञान होऊ लागते, सर्व प्रकारचे संशय, संदेह नाहीसे होतात; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When there is the arising of this inspiration `I am' in the inner space; when the logic that has covered over one's own swarup is destroyed; when one wards off body consciousness then, that atma is sattwa guna

शरीर लावावें कारणीं । साक्षेप उठे अंतःकर्णीं । सत्वगुणाची करणी । ऐसी असे ॥ ५१ ॥

शरीर भगवंताच्या कार्यांत पर्यायाने उत्तम उपयोगी लावावे असे अंतःकरणापासून वाटू लागते, अशीही सत्वगुणाची करणी असते.

When the body of this `all' is properly used and such resolve arises in this inner faculty of knowing; then there is this `doing' of the sattwa guna.

शांति क्ष्मा आणि दया । निश्र्चय उपजे जया । सत्वगुण जाणावा तया । अंतरीं आला ॥ ५२ ॥

ज्याच्या वागण्यांत दया, क्षमा आणि शांती जाणवू लागते, भक्तीचा निश्र्चय दिसुन येतो, त्याच्या अंतरी सत्वगुण उदय झाला असे समजावे.

When such a conviction arises then, mula maya is full of peace, forgiveness and com- passion; then that Reality should be known as the sattwa guna within this inner space.

आले अतीत अभ्यागत । जाऊं नेदी जो भुकिस्त । येथानशक्ती दान देत । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५३ ॥

अथिती, अभ्यागत आले असता त्यांना भुकलेले जाऊ देत नाही म्हणजेच त्यांचेआदरातिथ्य करुन जेऊखाऊ घालून व त्यांना दान दक्षिणा देऊन बोळवितो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the uninvited guest (the one who does not need to be invited/knowledge) turns up and one does not let him leave hungry (God hungers for devotion); when one offers one's own wealth by means of this power (`all') then, that atma is sattwa guna.

तडितापडी दैन्यवाणें । आलें आश्रमाचेनि गुणें । तयालागीं स्थळ देणें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५४ ॥

संन्यासी, तीर्थकरी, दुःखी, दीन लोक आश्रयासाठी आले तर त्यांना विन्मुख न पाठवता आसरा देतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When a poor religious wanderer comes to seek the benefit of shelter; it is that sattwa guna that gives him a place to stay.

आश्रमीं अन्नाची आपदा । परी विमुख नव्हे कदा । शक्तिनसार दे सर्वदा । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५५ ॥

स्वतःकडे अन्नाची कमतरता असुनही अभ्यागताला, अतिथिला विमुख न होता खाऊ घालतो, आपल्याशक्तिनुसार नेहमी देत राहतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

Though there may be a lack of this `food' (the essential food of `I am') within one's place of shelter, still one never turns one's face away (resolve is maintained); when one always gives with the understanding of this power of `I am' (everyone is myself) then, that atma is sattwa guna

जेणें जिंकिली रसना । तृप्त जयाची वासना । जयास नाहीं कामना । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५६ ॥

ज्याने खाण्यापिण्याची आवड जिंकली म्हणजे जीभेवर जय मिळविला, वासनेवर ती तृप्त करुन जय मिळविला म्हणजे वासना उदासिन होऊन वासनाहीन झाला, कोठच्याही प्रकारच्या इच्छा ठेवल्या नाहीत; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the tongue is subdued/conquered (no body consciousness) by mula maya; when the vasana (ie. to be) of mula maya has been satisfied completely; when mula maya has no desire for other things, then that atma is sattwa guna.

होणार तैसे होत जात । प्रपंची जाला आघात । डळमळिना ज्याचें चित्त । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५७ ॥

प्रपंची कोठचेही संकट आले किंवा आघात झाला तरी जसे व्हवायाचे तसे होणारच अशी वृत्ती ठेवून जो शांत राहतो, ज्याचे मन डळमळत नाही; तो सत्वगुण होय.

Whatever will come, let it come and whatever will go, let it go. In this worldly life calamities are sure to come and yet when the chitta of that purush is not disturbed, then that atma is sattwa guna.

येका भगवंताकारणें । सर्व सुख सोडिलें जेणें । केलें देहाचें सांडणें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५८ ॥

भगवंतावरील प्रेमाने सर्व प्रकारचे प्रापंचिक सुख सोडून दिले, स्वदेहाचेही सुख सोडले; तो सत्वगुण होय.

For this One God, the happiness of this `all' is let go by mula maya; when this creation of the `all' body is let slip away then, that atma is sattwa guna.

विषईं धावें वासना । परी तो कदा डळमळिना । ज्याचें धारिष्ट चळेना । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ५९ ॥

वासना अधुनमधुन विषयांची ओढ घेत असली तरी तो चळत नाही, आपला परमार्थ मार्ग सोडत नाही, आपले धैर्य, धारिष्ट टिकवून ठेवतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the vasana to be runs to the objects of sense and still that atma never moves; when the fortitude of that purush does not move then, that is sattwa guna.

देह अपदेने पीडला । क्षुधे तृषेनें वोसावला । तरी निश्र्चयो राहिला । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६० ॥

स्वतःला व देहाला आपदा, संकटें भोगावी लागली, तहान, भूक यांनी व्याकुळ व्हावे लागले तरी जो आपल्या निश्र्चयाला खंबीरपणे धरुन राहतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

Even if the body falls into great trouble and has to suffer hunger and thirst, still this conviction remains and that atma is sattwa guna (maharaj- when the belly is empty, you can know the Reality).

श्रवण आणी मनन । निजध्यासें समाधान । शुद्धजालें आत्मज्ञान । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६१ ॥

श्रवण, मनन, चिंतन करुन जो समाधानी होतो, व शुद्ध आत्मज्ञान मिळवतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

First there is shravan (to listen to the `I am') and manana (to keep it in one's mind), and then due to *nijadhyas (maharaj- natural meditation) there is complete contentment. When one has this knowledge of atma then that is sattwa guna. *(See 19.5.28; to enter and stay `there'/brahman)

जयास अहंकार नसे । नैराशता विलसे । जयापासीं कृपा वसे । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६२ ॥

ज्याच्यापाशी अहंकार नाही, नैराश्य नाही, आणि नेहमी जो लोकांवर कृपाच करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When mula maya has no ego, it shines freed of all hopes. When grace/*krupa stays near mula maya then that atma is sattwa guna. *(maharaj- krupa: kara, to do; paha, to see. Therefore do what the Master says and see for yourself)

सकळांसीं नम्र बोले । मर्यादा धरुन चाले । सर्व जन तोषविलें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६३ ॥

सर्वजणांशी नम्रतेने बोलणे व वागणे, स्वताःची मर्यादा ओळखून जो वागतो, अश्या वर्तणुकीने सर्व लोकांना आनंदी करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When there is this humble `speech' to the `all'; when one moves with such decorum and respect; when this `all' makes the mind happy then, that atma is the sattwa guna.

सकळ जनासी आर्जव । नाहीं विरोधास ठाव । परोपकारीं वेची जीव । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६४ ॥

सर्व लोकांसी आर्जवी बोलणे व वागणे, कोणाला विरोध न करता दुसर्‍याच्या मताचा आदर करणे, परोपकाराचे व्रत जीव ओतून करत राहणे; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When there is the sincerity of this `all' then, there is no place for hostility in the mind; when the jiva chooses to be that which uplifts this `all' (ie. atma) then, that is sattwa guna.

आपकार्याहून जीवीं । परकार्यसिद्धी करावी । मरोन कीर्ती उरवावी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६५ ॥

आपल्या स्वतःच्या कामापेक्षां दुसर्‍याचे काम आधी करावे, मेल्यानंतरही लोकांनी नांव काढावे; तो सत्वगुण होय.

Rather than our actions being performed within the jiva, there should be the estab- lishment of this action of the `all'. Thus, when the jiva dies then, one's pervasiveness remains and that is the sattwa guna.

पराव्याचे दोषगुण । दृष्टीस देखे आपण । समुद्रा ऐसी सांठवण । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६६ ॥

दुसर्‍याचे दोष बघुनही ते समुद्रासारखे जवळच साठवुन ठेवतो, इतरांजवळ किंवा त्याच्याजवळही ते बोलत किंवा उघड करत नाही. तो सत्वगुण होय.

These flawed gunas belong to another (to the mind/jiva); and it is you, this `I am', who understands this guna of the `all'. When everything is brought together, just like an ocean, then that is the sattwa guna.

नीच उत्तर साहाणें । प्रत्योत्तर न देणें । आला क्रोध सावरणें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६७ ॥

कोणी अपमान केला, दुरुत्तरे दिली तरी ती सहन करतो, त्याला उलट उत्तर देत नाही, आलेला राग आवरुन धरतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When this continuous reply (reply to the mind, `I am He') is maintained and nothing further is said (no more conjecture, opinions etc); and even if anger arises still this `I am' should still be respectfully guarded then, that is sattwa guna. (maharaj- when you are angry there is the thought `I should not be too angry', you calculate how angry you can be...but the Saint is completely angry)

अन्यायेंवीण गांजिती । नानापरी पीडा करिती । तितुकेंहि साठवी चित्तीं । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ६८ ॥

आपण दुसर्‍यांस त्रास दिला नसतांनासुद्धा दुसरे आपल्यास त्रास देत असतील तरी ते मनांत साठवून ठेवतो, थोडक्यांत त्यांच्याशी जशास तसे न्यायाने वागत नाही; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When That which is without fault, is tormented and teased then, the `many' creates so much suffering. But when this torment is only in the *chitta then, that is sattwa guna. *(One does not take the touch ie. the body suffers but I do not suffer)

शरीरें घीस साहाणें । दुर्जनासीं मिळोन जाणें । निंदकास उपकार करणें । हा सत्वगुण ॥ ६९ ॥

जो दुसर्‍यांच्या सुखासाठी आपले शरीर झिजवितो, दुर्जनांशीही आपलेपणाने वागतो, निंदकानी निंदा केली तरी त्यांच्यावरही उपकारच करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When this `I am' body endures these troubles then, the one far from atma (body consciousness mind) meets this knowing `all'; when this takes care of that one who censures it (ie. the mind) then, that is the sattwa guna.

मन भलतीकडे धावें । तें विवेकें आवरावें । इंद्रियें दमन करावें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७० ॥

विवेकाने, विचाराने ओढाळ मनाचे इकडे-तिकडे धावणे जो आवरतो, जो इंद्रियांचे दमन करतो, म्हणजेच इंद्रिय वासना आवरतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When that mind which runs around in all directions is brought under control by vivek; when the sense organs are gathered together, then that is the sattwa guna.

सत्क्रिया आचरावी । असत्क्रिया त्यागावी । वाट भक्तीची धरावी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७१ ॥

चांगली लोकहिताची कामे करावीत. वाईट कर्मांचा त्याग करावा, ती करु नयेत. भक्तिमार्गाचे आचरण करावे. तो सत्वगुण होय.

One should perform this pure action (ie. `He does'); one should abandon the untrue actions ("I am a doing"); when one holds fast to this path of devotion (to not be separate is devotion), then that atma is sattwa guna.

जया आवडे प्रातःस्नान । आवडे पुराणश्रवण । नाना मंत्रीं देवतार्चन । करी तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७२ ॥

जो सकाळी लवकर उठून नित्य कर्मे करतो, ज्याला पुराणे, भक्तीविषयक प्रवचने ऐकायला आवडतात, जो निरनिराळ्या देवतांची पूजा, अर्चना करतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one likes this early morning bath (by my own light, this world has appeared) and when one enjoys listening to the ancient One/purush; when the `many' thoughts within this mantra `I am' worships God then, that is the sattwa guna.

पर्वकाळीं अतिसादर । वसंतपूजेस तत्पर । जयंत्याची प्रीती थोर । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७३ ॥

ज्याला पर्वकाळाची आवड असते व त्यावेळी सेवेस हजर असतो, वसंतपूजेची विशेष आवड असते, देवदेवतांच्या जयंत्यांची फार प्रीती असून त्याप्रसंगी सेवेस तत्पर असतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one has great respect for this holy festival in this time of the `all' and when one is absorbed in this puja of vishnu (He knows); when one has love for the birth of the brahman then, that is the sattwa guna.

विदेसिं मेलें मरणें । तयास संस्कार देणें । अथवा सादर होणें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७४ ॥

कोणी बेवारस परदेशी मरण पावला तर त्याला संस्कार देतो किंवा त्याप्रसंगी हजर राहतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When that Reality dies in this `gathering' in the foreign land (ie. this gross world) and one performs this purification ceremony; or when one offers one's deep respect to That then, that is the sattwa guna.

कोणी येकास मारी । तयास जाऊन वारी । जीव बंधनमुक्त करी । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७५ ॥

कोणी एखादा दुसर्‍यास मारतअसेल तर मधे हस्तक्षेप करुन त्यास सोडवितो, अडकून पडलेल्या लोकांना सोडवितो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When that One who is within everyone is beaten and you go to the Reality and destroy the one who beats it (ie. the gross thoughts); when the jiva is freed from bondage then that is sattwa guna

लिंगें लाखोलीं अभिशेष । नामस्मरणीं विस्वास । देवदर्शनीं अवकाश । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७६ ॥

शिवलिंगाला लाख बेलाची पाने वाहून अभिषेक करणे, भगवंताच्या नामस्मरणी विश्र्वास ठेवणे म्हणजेच भगवंताचे नामस्मरण करणे व त्यामुळे चांगलेच होईल असा विश्र्वास मनांत ठेवणे, देवदर्शन नियमित घेण्यासाठी वेळ ठेवणे; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one installs/establishes that linga (ie. shiva) by the faithful remembrance of God's `name'; when one creates this space within and has the *darshan/`vision of God' then, that is sattwa guna. *(When nothing is there, He is there)

संत देखोनि धावें । परम सुख हेलावे । नमस्कारी सर्वभावें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७७ ॥

संत, साधु, सज्जन मंडळींचा आदरसत्कार उत्साहाने, धावून धावून करणे, व त्याने आनंदित होणे, त्यांना मनापासून नमस्कार करणे; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one runs to see the Eternal/Saint and that Supreme sways to and fro in delight; when one bows down with the understanding of this `all' then, that is sattwa guna

संतकृपा होय जयास । तेणें उद्धरिला वंश । तो ईश्र्वराचा अंश । सत्वगुणें ॥ ७८ ॥

ज्यावर संतकृपा झाली, त्याने आपला वंशाचाच उद्धार केला, तो प्रत्यक्ष ईश्र्वराचाच अंश होय; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When mula maya receives the blessing of the Eternal; when one is lifted out of this family of worldly existence then, that is a part of ishwara (purush) due to this sattwa guna.

सन्मार्ग दाखवी जना । जो लावी हरिभजना । ज्ञान सिकवी अज्ञाना । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ७९ ॥

जो लोकांना चांगला, हिताचा मार्ग दाखवितो, जो त्यांना भगवंताच्या भजनास, नामस्मरणांत लावतो, अज्ञानी लोकांना नश्र्वर जीवनांतून दिव्य जीवनांत कसे जावे ह्याचे ज्ञान देतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one shows the mind the true path and that purush establishes the bhajan of hari; when knowledge is taught to the ignorant mind then, that atma is sattwa guna

आवडे पुण्यसंस्कार । प्रदक्षणा नमस्कार । जया राहे पाठांतर । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ८० ॥

ज्याला पुण्यसंस्काराची आवड असते, देवाला प्रदक्षिणा व नमस्कार करण्याची आवड असते, ज्याचे (अध्यात्मविषयक) ज्ञान, पाठांतर चांगले असते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one delights in the merits accumulated from this purification ceremony; when one bows down and does this pradakshina (`Everywhere I go, I see Him'); when one keeps this constant remembrance then, that is sattwa guna.

भक्तीचा हव्यास भारी । ग्रंथसामग्री जो करी । धातुमूर्ति नानापरी । पूजी तो सत्वगुण ॥ ८१ ॥

ज्याला देव भक्तीची फार आवड असते, जो निरनिराळे ग्रंथ जवळ बाळगतो व त्यांचा अभ्यास करतो, देवाच्या वेगवेगळ्या धातुंच्या मूर्तिंची पूजा करणे ज्याला आवडते; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one who has earnest desire for devotion to that purush within this composition of words/scriptures; when He *utterly destroys this body made up of flesh and bone, and the ways of the `many', then that is sattwa guna. *(puja- to worship or utterly destroy) (siddharameshwar maharaj says, puja means to know; therefore when you simply know then all names and forms are utterly destroyed)

झळफळित उपकर्णें । माळा गवाळी आसनें । पवित्रें सोज्वळें वसनें । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ८२ ॥

देवाची पूजेची भांडी झळाळणारी, चकचकीत, कोरी असतात, निरनिराळ्या माळा, आसनें, गोमुखी, पवित्र, स्वच्छा वस्त्रे असतात; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When one cleans and purifies this instrument of worship (ie. the mind); when one makes to shine that One who stays within this `raised construction' of the body, then that is the sattwa guna.

परपीडेचें वाहे दुःख । परसंतोषाचें सुख । वैराग्य देखोन हरिख । मानी तो सत्वगुण ॥ ८३ ॥

ज्याला दुसर्‍याच्या दुःखाने वाईट वाटते व दुसर्‍याच्या सुखाने आनंद होतो, वैराग्य दिसल्यावर आनंद वाटतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

When the suffering of the jiva's suffering and the pleasure of the jiva's pleasure are both abandoned, then there is great joy and that atma is sattwa guna.

परभूषणें भूषण । परदूषणें दूषण । परदुःखें सिणे जाण । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ८४ ॥

दुसर्‍याचे भूषण ते आपले, दुसर्‍याचे दूषण ते आपले वाटते, दुसर्‍याचे दुःख ऐकून, बघून जो दुःखी होतो; तो सत्वगुण होय.

Honour is the honouring of the jiva and censure is the censuring of the jiva (it is not you who are honoured or censured); when one knows the suffering of the jiva's troubles then, that atma is sattwa guna (the mind or jiva suffers, but this sattwa guna only knows ie. is detached from these feelings)

आतां असों हें बहुत । देवीं धर्मीं ज्याचें चित्त । भजे कामनारहित । तो सत्वगुण ॥ ८५ ॥

आता हे सत्गुण वर्णन बरेच झाले. देवा धर्माकडे ज्याचे चित्त लागलेले असते, देवाची भक्ति निरहेतुकपणे करतो, तो सत्वगुण होय.

Now (when there is this sagun understanding), that thoughtless Self is this `all' (sattwa guna). When there is this `all' within God then, you are performing your dharma and your chitta is the chitta of that purush; when that purush makes bhajans without any desire and that is the sattwa guna.

ऐसा हा सत्वगण सात्त्विक । संसारसागरीं तारक । येणें उपजे विवेक । ज्ञानमार्गाचा ॥ ८६ ॥

असा हा सत्वगुण अत्यंत सात्विक असून संसारांतुन, दुःखांतुन तारुन नेणारा आहे. त्यामुळे चांगले विचार सुचतात व उत्तम ज्ञान प्राप्ती होते.

When that thoughtless understanding is this sattwa guna then, that is sattwik (it is a pure state of mind, still it is a state of mind) and it is the saviour within this ocean of samsar (the sattwa guna destroys body consciousness). It is on account of this sattwik quality that vivek arises (`I am He') and one is placed on this path of knowledge.

सत्वगुणे भगवद्भक्ती । सत्वगुणें ज्ञानप्राप्ती । सत्वगुणें सायोज्यमुक्ती । पाविजेते ॥ ८७ ॥

सत्वगुणामुळे भगवंताची भक्ति होते, ज्ञान मिळते आणि सायोज्यमुक्तीही मिळते.

Due to this sattwa guna there is devotion to God. Due to this sattwa guna there is the attainment of knowledge. And due to this sattwa guna, Final Liberation is achieved.

ऐसी सत्वगुणाची स्थिती । स्वल्प बोलिलें येथामती । सावध होऊन श्रोतीं । पुढें अवधान द्यावें ॥ ८८ ॥

अशीही सत्वगुणाची महती माझ्या बुद्धिला सुचल्याप्रमाणे थोडक्यांत सांगितली. श्रोत्यांनी सावधपणे पुढेले समासीही लक्ष,अवधान द्यावे.

When there is this state of sattwa guna then, that small body consciousness `speaks' with understanding. There should be such alertness within the listener and afterwards this should be given your complete attention. .
